The only piece of superstitious
lore I can recall from childhood (other than common superstitions about walking under ladders
and spilled salt) was the curious conviction that if one was to remain safe
after seeing an ambulance passing you must grab hold of the lapel of your
blazer and not let it go until you spotted a bird.
